He was a good marksman and known for his encyclopedic knowledge of arms and ammunition. Nothing pleased him more than to share his passion. He taught NRA Hunter Safety Courses and tried to include his whole family in his pursuit of the sport. Dick’s humility and caring personality made him good with people. He always held that one must have respect for others, no matter their situation because he said “There but by the grace of God go I.” This belief held him in great stead at the Belknap County Department of Corrections, where he was an officer for 21 years, retiring as a sergeant. Dick was articulate and quick witted with the ability to crack the perfect joke, turn the perfect phrase, say one appropriate word and bring a smile to your face. Musicians and writers inspired Dick’s awe and admiration. His respect for “wordsmiths” was boundless. He loved music of all genres and quoted poets, authors and lyrics from memory. Dick adored his family and was never happier than when surrounded by as many members as possible. Dick tried to teach by example, Respect, Understanding, Love, Kindness, Loyalty and Honor.
